2022 TICOM Collaboration Award Winners

The Innovative Tourism Collaboration Award for Marketing was presented to the Bellaire is Fresh Air campaign. At the very beginning of the pandemic, the entire tourism community within Bellaire immediately recognized the challenge of keeping their small town economically viable with its strong dependence on tourism. By mid-May of 2020, the business community came together and combined their individual audiences to elevate Bellaire collectively as a respite for safe travel, a place to escape crowds, and a place to be outside with multiple types of recreation. The concept of the theme "Bellaire is Fresh Air" resonated with the business partners immediately and the campaign was born. Each partner added to the creation and production of the marketing campaign by providing voice talent, creating videos and vlogs, developing radio and print advertising, and even merchandise. From the gourmet bakery to the yoga studio to Short's Brewery, each business began using the social media messaging collectively to celebrate "Bellaire is Fresh Air". The results were demonstrated in the record- setting revenue and visitation but, the most important result is that every storefront in Bellaire remains occupied. It was confirmed that the message is stronger, the audience reach is wider and the message's equity is greater when everyone comes together.

The Innovative Tourism Collaboration Award for an Experience Development Partnership was Awarded to "The Frankenmuth Christmas Experience." Frankenmuth developed a goal to spread the joy of the season in a more responsible way by utilizing more spaces and hosting a greater number of events for visitors to choose from every day of the week instead of just the very busy weekends. The two-year development projects have included the addition of a 40-foot Christmas tree with 23,000 programmed LED lights set to music, the placement of 175 trees lining all the downtown streets, and the largest destination development project is the addition of the "Frankenmuth Ice Rink" which greeted over 17,000 skaters in the first year. In 2021, "The Frankenmuth Christmas Experience" marketing campaign was launched with a designated landing page, social media campaign, a printed experience guide and interactive activities for guests to immerse in the activities and connect personally with businesses through contests and activities at the Farmer's Market. The Frankenmuth Christmas Experience has forever changed how the holiday season is celebrated in Michigan's Little Bavaria. What once was consisted of a couple of busy weekends, has transformed into a seasonal experience that can be enjoyed any day of the week during the season!

The Innovative Tourism Collaboration Award for an Education Partnership was presented to the collaborators of Safe Meetings in Michigan. As the pandemic took hold and shutdowns ensued, the meetings and events industry came to a grinding halt. Leaders within the industry did not sit idle and instead went into action to develop protocols and guidance that Michigan hotels, event venues and meeting professionals could use to return to meetings in a safe and responsible manner. More than seventy volunteers from sixty organizations representing health, tourism, state associations, and meeting professionals joined forces to create the Safe Meetings in Michigan coalition. The group broke into five subgroups and published five fully researched education pieces for the meeting process to create the Safe Meetings in Michigan Guidebook which has been downloaded over 6,000 times. The work culminated in the Safe Meetings in Michigan Virtual Conference in June 2020 to deliver the information to over 200 meeting professionals throughout the state and the Midwest region. The Safe Meetings in Michigan project exemplified the very best of what industries and associations can accomplish when they coalesce around a common cause. The industry is still relying on many of the protocols and practices that were developed nearly two years ago. And while the pandemic continues to affect the meetings industry, the work done through Safe Meetings in Michigan allows host venues and host organizations to feel empowered to move forward in bringing people together for conferences and events.

2019 Award Winners:

The 2019 Governor’s Awards for Innovative Tourism Collaboration were presented at the recent Pure Michigan Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Traverse City. The awards were presented by Dave Lorenz of Travel Michigan, representing the Governor, and Mary Zucchero, representing the Tourism Industry Coalition of Michigan (TICOM).

The Governor’s Awards for Innovative Tourism Collaboration were created by the Michigan Travel Commission, in conjunction with the Governor’s Office, to elevate the status of Michigan’s tourism industry and to promote innovative collaboration as an effective, efficient and creative operating principle for the industry. The inaugural awards were presented at the 2009 annual Tourism Conference.

In the Tourism Experience Development category, “Lansing’s Sensory Friendly Collaboration” was given the award. This is a collaborative of Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau, Mid-Michigan Autism Association, Wharton Center for Performing Arts and Residential Options, Inc.

Grand Rapids’ Accessible Destination, which brought together Experience Grand Rapids, DisArts and the Disability Advocates of Kent County, was presented the collaboration award for Non-Traditional Partnership.

Experience Grand Rapids reached out to collaborate with some non-traditional tourism partners in an effort to create a better experience for people with disabilities looking to travel to Grand Rapids. Through the partnerships, great strides have been made to heighten knowledge and information about accessibility in the community including the assessment of over 60 venues on their level of accessibility with very specific features that would be helpful for a visitor. The venues were then listed under a new “accessibility tab” on Experience Grand Rapids’ website.

The award for Education/Training was presented to the Michigan Alliance for Cultural Accessibility- a collaboration of over 35 institutions across Michigan ranging from museums to performing art centers to orchestras, universities, and libraries.

Institutions that have come together through MACA likely would not have collaborated on accessibility without a shared forum to do so. MACA has initiated quarterly meetings, a quarterly newsletter, a Facebook page and a website to allow for the sharing of accessibility-related resources, programs and events. MACA has also hosted two professional development workshops with more being planned. The success of MACA proves that, by working together, institutions can enhance accessibility more effectively than working alone.

The Tourism Industry Coalition of Michigan is comprised of more than 50 statewide tourism associations, corporations and convention and visitor bureaus whose mission is to promote Michigan’s travel and tourism industry as a vital component of economic development and quality of life through governmental advocacy, public relations, and other promotional and educational efforts.

2018 Award Winners:

Non-Traditional Partnership winner – Project Tourism

This is a collaborative of Michigan Travel Commission’s Product Development Committee, Events North, and Chemical Bank.

Project Tourism is a live event modeled after the television program Shark Tank but focused on hospitality-based businesses to receive funding for special projects.

The event was open to established businesses rather than start-ups. Each was asked to dream big and then sell their idea. The committee narrowed the field to six finalists who made their 5-minute pitch to persuade the panel and audience to vote for their project.

With $10,000 in funding available, the competition was intense with the Raven Brewing Company being awarded the first place to leverage funding for façade improvement for their business in Cadillac. The collaboration created a model to be replicated around the state and it also illustrates how every business is a part of Michigan’s tourism industry.

Marketing Partnership winner – Gaylord Golf Mecca

Gaylord Golf Mecca is a collaboration of: Cherry Capital Airport and the Gaylord Golf Mecca and Gaylord Area Convention & Tourism Bureau

The Gaylord Golf Mecca Collaborative is unique in that it combines an airport, rather than an airline, partnering with a tourism destination which is not located directly in the same community as the airport.

For years, the Gaylord Golf Mecca had wanted to break out from only marketing to states in the Midwest, but the challenge had been air service to bring golfers from warm weather markets in the summer. The Cherry Capital Airport proposed a cooperative marketing program targeting Dallas, Texas.

From day one in 2013, the goal was to create enough visitor traffic to generate direct flight service from Dallas Fort Worth Airport to Traverse City, which would generate longer golf vacations benefitting the entire northern Michigan area.

The marketing initiatives included hosting travel writers, outbound and inbound media blitzes, attendance at golf shows in Dallas, and digital campaigns. In five years, the collaboration has resulted in room sales from Texas reaching the third highest in state of origin when previously it had not been in the top ten. And, in 2017, the Cherry Capital Airport accomplished the goal of welcoming non-stop service from DFW with the service continuing in 2018.

Paddle for Pints - A collaborative of 18 businesses and organizations in the greater Traverse City Area.

Paddle for Pints is a Brewery Pub Paddle on Traverse City's Boardman Lake & River and the West Bay. Participants meet at the Filling Station Microbrewery and, at designated times, 100 participants launch for an urban paddle through downtown Traverse City. The experience takes participants along a guided course and they visit 6 breweries along the way. Paddle for Pints has become one of Traverse City's biggest summer events drawing people from all over Michigan and 23 states. The event began in 2013 with two event dates of 60 people each. Last year, the event consisted of 27 event dates totaling 4,800 participants which sold out in 47 minutes when the dates were announced. The continued innovative collaboration between the local partners is what has sustained the growth and demand of the event and created another sellout year for 2017.

Non-Traditional Partnership:

Up North Trails – A collaboration of: Top of Michigan Trails Council, Northeast Michigan Council of Governments, Networks Northwest Land Information Access Association, Traverse Area Recreational and Transportation Trails, Inc., Cheboygan County, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Northern Lakes Economic Alliance, Flight Path Creative, and 21 County Representatives.

The Up North Trails Collaborative brings together regional stakeholders to support and enhance economic development opportunities by developing a comprehensive trail marketing initiative in northern lower Michigan. The common goal of this collaborative is to promote all the trail systems in a 21-county area to create further opportunities for trail enthusiasts. A grand total of 5,358 miles of trail were identified and mapped. After the massive data collection was complete, the information was presented through a robust trail mapping website “upnorthtrails.org”. To take the initiative one step further, 5 pilot communities were chosen to undergo a Trail Town planning process to capitalize on the benefit of trail tourism. The process included consistently branded trailhead kiosk signs, trail guides, trailblazer signs and community gateway signs. The collaboration is truly a unique and geographically wide-ranging effort, resulting in a promotional effort throughout northern Michigan.

Marketing Partnership:

Lake Huron Discovery Tour- A collaboration of Michigan Arts & Culture Northeast, Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan, Northeast Michigan Council of Governments/US 23 Heritage Route, Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Mitten Women Productions

In 2015, a collaboration of individuals, communities, organizations, agencies and businesses contributed over 4,000 volunteer hours to plan and execute a tourism marketing project called Lake Huron Discovery Tour during the fall color season. The tour consisted of a four-day event weekend focused along the US23 Heritage Route and the shoreline of Lake Huron in northeast Michigan. The self- guided tour opportunity included a collection of natural and cultural attractions and over 100 special events for the weekend. The tour was promoted through user friendly, collaborative tools with consistent branding and messaging. This uniform marketing approach promoted this broad area as a regional destination resulting in sold out hotels and visitors being able to discover new experiences along coastal Lake Huron.

Autopalooza – A collaborative of the MotorCities National Heritage Area, the Detroit Metro CVB, Don Nicholson Enterprises and Travel Michigan

Autopalooza was created as a collaboration to promote the unique automotive events which occur across southeast Michigan during the summer. The promotion all of these events together, connects the culture of auto heritage throughout the region and presents the events in a new and compelling way.

Autopalooza features 18 events and the reach spreads from the downriver Detroit area, to the Woodward Dream Cruise, the Pure Michigan 400, and to Lansing with the Car Capitol Celebration. It is estimated that through the various Autopalooza events, over 3 million visitors and residents are reached and linked to Michigan’s automotive heritage and culture.

Non-Traditional Partnership:

Cell Block 7 – A collaboration with Experience Jackson, the Michigan Department of Corrections and the Ella Sharpe Museum.

For over a century, Jackson has been home to Michigan’s largest prison. Over time, there had been conversations about turning this negative perception in Jackson into a positive asset. Recently, an innovative collaboration came together and within 19 months, a new attraction was created…Cell Block 7.

The partnership between Experience Jackson and the Michigan Department of Corrections is unprecedented by bringing a local non-profit’s vision for a unique tourism experience together with a state department’s goal of improving the perception and image of the corrections system.

While both parties agreed a museum in block 7 of the prison could work, the major stumbling block centered on who would operate the facility if it was developed. Experience Jackson reached out to the Ella Sharp Museum, a nationally accredited community museum and they agreed to operate the facility.

Michigan’s tourism industry can now boast of having the only prison museum in the country that is located within an operating prison complex which thousands of visitors have now experienced.

Non-Traditional Partnership:

Michigan Cares for Tourism- A collaboration of the Department of Hospitality & Tourism Management-Grand Valley State University, MI Department of Natural Resources, Indian Trails and DRIVEN – Modern Media Group

Michigan Cares for Tourism is a 100% volunteer, 100% give back partnership between Michigan tourism organizations which come together to help restore Michigan’s historic attractions, learn about a Michigan tourism community, and network across industry segments to ultimately enhance the visitor experience.

In their first two years, Michigan Cares has engaged 890 tourism professionals as volunteers at the four Michigan historic attractions that have hosted restoration and clean-up efforts.

Tourism Marketing and Promotion:

Passion is evident in Grand Rapids as craft beer lovers unite, art transforms the city during ArtPrize and laughter is part of the fabric of the community during LaughFest. The various events, festivals and brands in Grand Rapids have a lot of interest and support, but did not have a permanent, long-term retail location for fans to purchase items to display their enthusiasm or to use as gifts.  So, Experience Grand Rapids, ArtPrize, the GR & (Grand) Brand and LaughFest partnered together to create a merchandise management system through Markit Merchandise and a joint website, which was designed by Mindutopia.  Now, through the creation of grandrapidsstore.com, visitors can purchase branded merchandise for ArtPrize, Beer City USA, GR& and Laughfest all at one website.  The collaboration eliminates multiple efforts while enhancing exposure for each brand year round.  Since May of 2014, the online store has sold thousands of dollars in merchandise, which has been sent to customers from 20 different states and around the world.Education & Training:

Northwest Michigan Wine Tasting Room Training Program

This collaboration is a two year effort between the wineries of Traverse City, Old Mission Peninsula and the Leelanau Peninsula.   Ten different wineries, headed by a five person steering committee, collaborated throughout 2013 – 2014 to create a credentialed program for wine tasting rooms that features education, training and competency in the areas of customer service, wine fluency and alcohol management.  This program developed the curriculum and instructional materials and then trained 16 individuals with skills that they did not possess prior to this program.  Created by the wine industry for the wine industry, this program is the first of its kind. Staff in the winery tasting rooms will now have skills and tips to further enhance the experience for the customers and to boost credibility of the Michigan wine industry.  The next objective is a statewide roll-out of the training program.
